Make New Friends with Girl Scouts!

March 31, 2026

Make New Friends

You want a lot of things for your daughter, and a life rich in healthy, supportive friendships is definitely among them. Friends are the ones we count on and who we are there for; the ones we go on adventures and share our true selves with. Friends are precious, which is why they’re likened to precious metals in one of the most famous Girl Scout songs of all time: “Make new friends, but keep the old. One is silver and the other is gold.” (If you were watching the tribute to late actress Diane Keaton during the Oscars, you heard Rachel McAdams recite this beloved song!)

Choosing friends is a highly personal thing. Very young girls often don’t even know why they are friends with one person and not another; they just click (or don’t) and that’s totally okay and normal. Your daughter could find friends in her neighborhood, school, church, or places like Girl Scouts.

Where Friendship Grows

Girl Scouts gives her the chance to make an entire squad of friends, who will discover and explore and grow up together. Girl Scouting creates an environment that encourages girls to develop close-knit bonds with each other, away from the normal pressures of school or other co-ed environments. They may get to know other girls of different ages, who go to different schools, or who live in different neighborhoods. This helps give perspective on the world outside of their normal, day-to-day routine, which builds resilience. Teamwork, collaboration, and cooperation with close friends allows girls to grow with one another while boosting each other up.

It’s obvious that those bonds and memories can last well into adulthood, as evidenced by the little song of friendship making its way to the big stage at the Oscars — a song that more than 50 million Girl Scout alum still know by heart.

There’s always room for new friends, and always a place for every girl in Girl Scouts! Any girl in grades K-12 can join, but girls going into kindergarten or first grade this fall can take advantage of the Get Ready with Girl Scouts™ program, a special summer experience to help them make friends and start school with confidence. Families are invited to learn more by attending a free Make New Friends event this spring, being held at locations across Hampton Roads. Find one near you and sign up today at gsccc.org/friends.
